High resolution scan of a vintage image plate depicting Montreal and By Town, Canada. Taken from a German book titled Beschreibung von Nord-Amerika (Description of North America) published circa 1840s.
Little did I know before scanning this image, By Town - or rather Bytown - was the former name of Ottawa (Canada's current capital city). Ottawa would only receive its official name in 1855, around a decade after the publication of this book. Incidentally, I was also born in Ottawa and lived 15 years in Montreal. One neat coincide I'd say to find both places I once called home depicted in a single vintage image plate, thanks to the Germans no less 🤭
