Since 2015 I have been volunteering as a photographer at the same museum, now called the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. What I do is not too different than what you see in the image plate here. Nowadays I do photo editing for the most part; i.e. a colleague takes the photos first, and passes them onto me so I can combine various shell angles into a single image plate. On mollusk specimens too, although most of them come as pure shells (without animals inside them), and we work with photos instead of illustrations.
