Vintage Postcard - Newport, R.I., Vernon House, Count Rochambeau's Headquarters.

Vintage Postcard - Newport, R.I., Vernon House, Count Rochambeau's Headquarters.

High resolution scan of a vintage postcard depicting Vernon House in Newport, Rhode Island, USA. Circa 1907.

As mentioned in the postcard caption, Vernon House was Count Rochambeau's Headquarters. That sounds a little vague though, at least to me. For better context, he was a French general who helped the Americans win the Revolutionary War, and this Vernon House in Rhode Island served as his headquarters.

Curious coincidence at that since Rochambeau worked closely with George Washington, and George Washington's estate is named Mount Vernon. Located in the Commonwealth of Virginia mind you, some 400+ miles away from Vernon House in Newport, Rhode Island. The two Vernons don't even appear to be connected except by name, so it is probably just an interesting coincidence and nothing more. Then again, Rochambeau might have chosen Vernon House for its name as a subtle gesture of admiration for George Washington (and his Mount Vernon by association).
