Originally found on the back side of my paternal grandfather Oscar Raymond's obituary, it definitely caught me off guard in the moment. Not because it's French, it was a good exercise if anything for me to brush up. But it looks like this "homme du cénotaphe", or "cenotaph man", had quite the score to settle...

I don't want to bore you with the French transcript and English translation, but the gist of it is a self-titled cenotaph man vandalized a cenotaph in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec. Acknowledging that he had been caught and fined, but basically bragging about the deed in writing, and that he did not have to pay a cent in damages due to overwhelming support from the community. For further context, it appears this was a Québecois / French-Canadian nationalist taunting the English as there is a Canadian military base in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu.
