After first moving here circa 1985, I figured it was high time to start exploring my home town. For some odd reason, I've had this tendency of taking my surroundings for granted over the years, but that has been changing lately. Lots of interesting local history, and for all the times I drove past this sign, I finally decided to walk up to it and snap a few photos.

I didn't plan to pose or anything, but the sign is located in an awkward spot for pedestrians where the road splits off. So I was kind of sticking out like a sore thumb to car traffic and other pedestrians while taking these photos. Then a security guard from the local naval hospital was walking by and offered to take a photo of me. Telling me exactly where to position myself so all of the letters of Bethesda could be seen, then we got talking about history and different world cultures.

Very grateful for that encounter and the photo he took of me, with a security guard no less who was probably just doing his rounds. A reminder that we are all human, including this person behind the scenes 😉
